It was built in 1943, and the Altus Air Force Base host unit is the 97th Air Mobility Wing assigned to the Nineteenth Air Force of the Air Education and Training Command. Fort McCoy is a massive base covering about 60,000 acres of land between Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin, in Monroe County.
