The United States Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown is one of eight major training facilities that the USCG has in the United States. Training Center Yorktown lies at the easternmost tip of Virginia’s historical triangle that is formed by Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. In 1917, the United States Navy purchased land from Yorktown, Virginia on the peninsula to serve as a fuel depot. In 1942, the Navy used a part of this land to form its Mine Warfare School. The United States Coast Guard took possession of the Navy’s school in 1959, officially commissioning the Reserve Training Center (RTC) followed later that same year. The original purpose for this facility was to serve as Coast Guard’s Officer Candidate School and to host a large summer training program for Reservists. Today, this installation’s primary mission is training and hosts multiple training schools, from basic to advanced, that are attended by active duty members, reservists, civilians, and auxiliary members.

Yorktown is the county seat of York County, with history that stretches back to the first settling of this county, being one of the eight original shires formed in colonial Virginia in 1682. Yorktown has many interesting sites for residents and visitors to enjoy. Some of these include the Yorktown Victory Center, American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, Yorktown Battlefield, Yorktown Beach, Colonial Parkway, Riverwalk Landing, Colonial National Historical Park, The Waterman’s Museum, Yorktown National Cemetery, and many more.
