Fort DeRussy Military Reservation is situated in the Waikiki district of Honolulu, Hawaii. The reservation is in Oahu Island, the most populated island (with a population of approximately 1 million people) out of the 8 major islands of Hawaii. Historically, Fort DeRussy is one of the sites that housed coastal batteries that defended the island, however, due to their ineffectiveness against attacks from the air, the batteries were removed from the shore. Nowadays, the Fort DeRussy Military Reservation is home to the following military facilities: Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, Armed Forces Recreation Center, and the Hale Koa Hotel – which is only open to active duty or retired personnel of the armed forces.

Due to it not being an active military base, but rather a military reservation that houses some facilities, there is no on-base housing on Fort DeRussy, so if you have a long-term assignment here, you would have to look for housing off-base. And for that, your best bet would be looking at houses in Honolulu. Oahu can be deceptively large, and with 1 million people living on the island, the traffic can be overwhelming. The best neighborhoods in Honolulu are as follows: Kahala, if you want to be near the Diamond Head district and with large, mainland style single-family housing; Manoa if you are looking for a quiet neighborhood, and Kaimuki if you are price sensitive.

There are no DoD schools on the base. All public education in Hawaii is handled by the Hawaii Department of Education, it is not handled on a county level. There are a lot of schools just outside Fort DeRussy, though.
