The Dyess Air Force Base is located close to downtown Abilene, Texas. This base has a rich history and has had many name changes over the years. In 1942, the Abilene Army Airbase was opened, changing its name to Abilene Army Airfield in 1943. This was originally a flying training center for cadets and was closed in 1946. After its closure, the air field was sold to the City of Abilene and for years after was used as a training center for the Texas Army National Guard. In 1952, this facility was purchased from the City of Abilene by the United States Air Force and in 1956 the Abilene Air Force Base opened.
