Yuma Proving Ground is a proving ground of the US Army, and it is one of the largest military bases in the world. The base is a part of the Army Test and Evaluation Command. Its main role is to provide a testing ground for new military weapons or ordnances. The base employs as many as 3,000 civilians, which makes it the largest employer in Yuma County. The nearest city to the base is Yuma, a large city with close to 100,000 inhabitants. Yuma is also the largest city in the state of Arizona to be located outside of the Phoenix or Tucson areas.
