The Yakima Training Center (YTC) is a sub-installation of Joint Base Lewis-McChord and is located about 10 miles north of the city of Yakima in the south-central portion of Washington state. It encompasses 327,231 acres within Yakima and Kittitas Counties in central Washington State. It is a training center used for maneuver training, Land Warrior system testing, and a live-fire exercise area. It is located, bounded on the west by Interstate 82, on the south by the city of Yakima, on the north by the town of Ellensburg and Interstate 90, and on the east by the Columbia River.


Unlike larger military bases, YTC doesn’t offer housing, schools or shopping for stationed service members. While the school districts in Yakima can serve children, the child development center at Fort Lewis offers affordable quality child care for children from 6 weeks through 12 years of age.


Located in the state’s center, Yakima, a city of 80,000 people, has many historical and recreational opportunities such as golf, museums, and auto racing. The area also offers more than 90 local wineries. Nearby, it borders the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range, which offer skiing, outdoor recreation, hunting, fishing, and hiking, and the Columbia River banks. The land is high desert and is covered with sagebrush, volcanic formations, dry gulches, and large rock outcroppings.
