Wheeler Army Airfield is located right next to Schofield Barracks, near the town of Wahiawa, situated at the center of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Oahu Island is the most populated island (with a population of approximately 1 million people) out of the 8 major islands of Hawaii. It’s also considered a historic landmark, as the airfield was one of the main targets during the Attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The base is located approximately 20 miles from downtown Honolulu and 15 miles away from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. It’s also 10 miles away from the North Shore, famous for its pristine beaches and resorts.

Wheeler Army Airfield offers housing on the base. Housing on Wheeler Army Airfield is privatized, and it is managed by Island Palm Communities. There are 2-4 bedroom single-family housing on offer, however, due to scarcity of land on the base, there aren’t too many units, which means the waitlist is quite long. If you are looking for housing off the base, your best bet would be looking at the towns of Wahiawa, which is just outside the base; or Mililani, which is around 5 miles south of the base. Oahu can look deceptively small, but traffic can severely prolong commute times, that’s why living in Honolulu is not a popular choice for service members assigned to Wheeler Army Airfield.

There are no DoD schools on the base. All public education in Hawaii is handled by the Hawaii Department of Education, it is not handled on a county level. However, there is one elementary school and one middle school located on the base and a high school located in the town of Wahiawa which is just outside the base.

Hawaii is possibly the most diverse place in all of the US, and PCS’ing to Hawaii is certainly a unique experience. While that may come with some downsides as well (such as the constant rain and coqui frogs), the positives of the Aloha spirit outweigh them.
