Westover Air Reserve Base, formerly known as Westover Air Force Base, is located near the cities of Chicopee, Holyoke, and Ludlow, in Hampden County, in southern Massachusetts. The base is 6 miles northeast of Chicopee, 10 miles northwest of Ludlow, and 5 miles east of Holyoke. The nearest major city is Springfield, approximately 10 miles away from the base, which is the third-most populous city in the state after Worcester and Boston. The base is the largest Air Reserve Base in the country today, covering more than 4 square miles of land. It also houses the longest runway of Massachusetts, coming in at more than 7,000 feet. These days, the base is home to the 439th Airlift Wing and the 4th Air Force Reserve Command.

Westover Air Reserve Base does not offer on-base housing, government or privatized. However, there is a privatized housing community just outside the base named Atlantic Marine Corps Communities which offers 124 housing units for all ranks and family sizes. Since housing supply is limited at the base, most military families are looking for housing in the local community. Although Massachusetts has a higher cost of living than most other states, the base is located in an area that has a lower cost of living than the state average. If you are looking for housing off-base, your best bet would be to look at Chicopee, Ludlow, or Springfield.

There are no DoD schools on base, and there aren’t any public schools on the base either. Children of military families are served by the Hampden County School District. Because of the base’s central location, there are many public schools nearby the base.
