According to several sources, Newport is said to be the sailing capital of the world and is called the city by the sea. Newport is located on an island, specifically along the southern part of Rhode Island. It has a long history and was often used for military installations, and this makes it a prime location for the United States Coast Guard, which put up a military base called Station Castle Hill. This base is controlled by the First District with the orders and regulations of the US Coast Guard. Station Castle Hill supports the US Coast Guard and all of its activities.

Brenton Village, Clarks Village, Forty Steps, and Mary’s Seat are some areas around the base where one can get off-base housing. Like most coast guard stations, there is no housing on the base, but you could always get where to stay in the town. Some of these places contain unofficial military communities. Higher institutions in the area, including Salve Regina University, US Naval War College, and IYRS School of Technology and Trades, are not on-base schools. Still, Newport has many schools that you can send your kids to. Schools like Claiborne Pell Elementary School, Williams S. Rogers High School, Newport Community School, St. Michael Country Day School, Emmanuel Day School, and Mudford School.
