Located 8.4 miles from downtown Sumter in South Carolina is Shaw Air Force Base, one of the largest military bases in the United States. Shaw AFB is under the command of the United States Air Force Combat Command. It was built in 1941 and is the home of the 15th Air Force Headquarters and the 20th Fighter Wing. Sumter is the county seat for Sumter County. It is about 45 miles from Columbia, the state capital, and is known for its rich military history.

If you get stationed in Shaw AFB, you could stay in Cherryvale, Westhaven, City Center, South Sumter, or Carolina Garden. These are all friendly neighborhoods to raise a family off base. There is provision for unaccompanied housing and community housing on the base provided by Hunt Military Community which has more than 600 homes that come in various styles. It has floorplans ranging from 1,790 square feet to 3,082 square feet.

There are no schools on Shaw AFB, although students who live on the air force base will attend schools in the Sumter School District. These schools are Berea Junior Academy, Holy Angels Academy, St. Francis Xavier High School, Sumter Academy, and Thomas Sumter Academy. You should know that there is a daycare and Child Development Center on base.

Sumter is not short of things to do with festivals like the Festival on the Avenue-a West African Bimbé festival of harvest, the Bethune Legacy Festival in the third week of May, and Iris Festival on Memorial Day Weekend will keep you busy.
