Schofield Barracks are located near the town of Wahiawa, situated at the center of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Oahu Island is the most populated island (with a population of approximately 1 million people) out of the 8 major islands of Hawaii. The main mission of Schofield Barracks is to provide mobile defense to Pearl Harbor and the island of Oahu in general. The base is approximately 25 miles away from downtown Honolulu and it is 20 miles away from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, the main airport that serves the Oahu Island.


On-base housing in Schofield Barracks is privatized and it is managed by Island Palm Communities. There are many types of housing units on offer, ranging from 2 to 5-bedroom houses. There are no DoD schools on the base. All public education in Hawaii is handled by the Hawaii Department of Education, it is not handled on a county level. However, there are 2 elementary schools located on base, and there is a middle school located just across the base, in Wheeler Army Airfield.


Hawaii is possibly the most diverse place in all of the US, and PCS’ing to Hawaii is certainly a unique experience. While that may come with some downsides as well (such as the constant rain and coqui frogs), the positives of the Aloha spirit outweigh them.
