Pohakuloa Training Center is located on the island of Hawaii, in the state of Hawaii. It is located right in the middle of 3 volcanic mountains – Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The island of Hawaii is the largest of all islands in Hawaii. In fact, it is the largest island in all of the United States, hence the name “Big Island”. However, even though the island is the biggest in terms of landmass, it does not have the most residents – that feature goes to the island of Oahu, which is also home to Honolulu, the state capital. However, the island of Hawaii is by no means barren and desolate, it is still home to more than 180,000 residents.

Because of its remote location, there is no on-base housing at Pohakuloa Training Area. There isn’t even a commissary or medical facilities on base. All service members stay off-base, most of them staying in the city of Hilo which is the largest city on the island. Hilo is 35 miles away from the base, and it is home to 45,000 people. Hawaii has a very high cost of living compared to the mainland, and that is reflected in prices of rentals as well, however since this is considered a remote assignment, service members are compensated accordingly. If you are looking for cheaper off-base housing, you would have to look for housing in Keaau, or Mountain View.

As expected, there are no schools on base as well. Children of service members are served by the Hawaii County School System. Most schools on the islands are concentrated in the city of Hilo, however, providing easy access to education.

Hawaii is possibly the most diverse place in all of the US, and PCS’ing to Hawaii is certainly a unique experience. While that may come with some downsides as well (such as the constant rain and coqui frogs), the positives of the Aloha spirit outweigh them.
