Located in an area rich in colonial history, Naval Weapons Station Yorktown has land in York County, James City County, and Newport News. The site of the weapons station, acquired in 1918, was, at the time, the largest naval installation in the world, and was named the Navy Mine Depot. In 1958 the name was changed to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and continues to provide critical fleet ordinance support for the United States Navy. NWS Yorktown hosts 33 tenant commands and 19 departments at this installation.

Yorktown is the county seat of York County, with history that stretches back to the first settling of this county, being one of the eight original shires formed in colonial Virginia in 1682. Yorktown has many interesting sites for residents and visitors to enjoy.
