Naval Station Norfolk is a United States Navy base in Norfolk, Virginia. Serving as the headquarters and home port of the U.S. Navy’s Fleet Forces Command, Naval Station Norfolk is the world’s largest naval station. Originally the site of the 1907 Jamestown Exposition, this area was determined to be ideal for naval activity and was purchased by the government in 1917. Over the years, Norfolk has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, first in 1776, a fire during 1804, and during the Confederate War. Today Norfolk is a thriving city with a large population, the site of the campus for Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, one of the campuses for Tidewater Community College and has close ties to the Navy.
