Originally named Norfolk Naval Hospital, formerly Naval Hospital Portsmouth, the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) is the oldest continuously running hospital in the Navy medical system. Located in Portsmouth, Virginia, on the historic Hospital Point, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth began its original operation in 1830, continuing today to serve past service members, past and present, and their families. In addition to medical care for patients, the NMCP also has research and teaching programs that are designed to develop new doctors, nurses, and corpsmen for their future roles in healthcare.

Portsmouth, Virginia, a Coastal Virginia city that has a history that spans more than 300 years, is located across the Elizabeth River from Downtown Norfolk. Portsmouth, a historic seaport, has ties to the United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy. There is some housing available for those stationed at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, however, military personnel have the option to find housing off-base. Some of the preferred neighborhoods in Portsmouth are Edgefield, River Pointe, Hodges Manor, Sterling Point, and Simonsdale. Other areas, presenting a variety of surrounding activities, and housing types can be explored such as those in Norfolk, such as Riverview and Lafayette Shores, with many areas being less than an hour commute.
