Originally named Norfolk Naval Hospital, formerly Naval Hospital Portsmouth, the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) is the oldest continuously running hospital in the Navy medical system. There is some housing available for those stationed at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, however, military personnel have the option to find housing off-base. Some of the preferred neighborhoods in Portsmouth are Edgefield, River Pointe, Hodges Manor, Sterling Point, and Simonsdale. Other areas, presenting a variety of surrounding activities, and housing types can be explored such as those in Norfolk, such as Riverview and Lafayette Shores, with many areas being less than an hour commute.
