In 1846, the marines landed in San Diego from USS Savannah and USS Congress. The marines then broke ground for a permanent base on March 2, 1919. This is when the Marine Corps Recruit Depot came about. Commonly known as MCRD San Diego, this United States Marine Corps military installation lies between San Diego Bay and Interstate 5, which is beside the San Diego International Airport.

Near MCRD, you will find a Drill Instructor’s School for the Western Recruiting Region. There is also a Recruiter’s School for the Marine Corps. Aside from this, there are several schools that all help with the Marine Corps mission, such as the Communications and Electronics School for example.

As of now, some of the activities in the military installation are deemed private or only allowed for those with military permission due to COVID-19 restrictions. Nevertheless, one of the activities that could be done over there is to visit the Depot Command Museum.

For those with families, it is important to know about the schools in the area. Unfortunately, there are no schools located at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. However, there are over 40 school districts you can check out that serve the communities near San Diego. Most districts also offer bus transportation for children living more than a mile away from the school.
