In 1846, the marines landed in San Diego from USS Savannah and USS Congress. The marines then broke ground for a permanent base on March 2, 1919. This is when the Marine Corps Recruit Depot came about. Commonly known as MCRD San Diego, this United States Marine Corps military installation lies between San Diego Bay and Interstate 5, which is beside the San Diego International Airport.


Near MCRD, you will find a Drill Instructor’s School for the Western Recruiting Region. There is also a Recruiter’s School for the Marine Corps. Aside from this, there are several schools that all help with the Marine Corps mission, such as the Communications and Electronics School for example.
