McConnell Air Force Base is located in Sedgwick County, 9 miles southeast of downtown Wichita, the most populous city of Kansas. Historically, the city has been a huge hub for aircraft manufacturing and well-known manufacturers include Beechcraft, Cessna, Airbus, and Boeing and it is still considered “The Air Capital of the World” to this day. In fact, Cessna’s, and Spirit AeroSystems headquarters are located just outside the base. These days, the base is home to 22nd Air Refueling Wing, Air Force Reserve Command’s 931st Air Refueling Wing, and Kansas Air National Guard’s 184th Intelligence Wing.

McConnell AFB offers on-base housing, and it is privatized. Like other bases in Kansas, on-base housing is managed by Corvias Military Living, which offers housing depending on the applicant’s rank and the size of his/her family. Since the base is really close to a major city, most families are also looking for housing off base as well. If you are looking for housing off base in Wichita, here are the neighborhoods you should be on the lookout for Bel Aire, Andover, and Eastborough if you want to live on the East Side; Maize, and Goddard if you want to live on the West Side. No matter which side you end up on since Wichita is a relatively small city, your commutes will be quite short.

There are no DoD schools on base, and there aren’t any public schools on base either. If you live on base, your children will be attending Derby Unified School District 260, Wineteer Elementary School is located just outside the base. Because of the base’s proximity to the city, though, there are a lot of options for schooling.
