Marine Corps Base Hawaii is located in the Mokapu peninsula of the Oahu Island, in Hawaii. Oahu Island, which also is home to the state capital, Honolulu, is the most populated island (with a population of approximately 1 million people) out of the 8 major islands of Hawaii. Marine Corps Base Hawaii, also known as the Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, also serves as the main air station for the Marine Corps on the island. MCBH is approximately 15 miles away from downtown Honolulu, and it is 20 miles away from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, the main airport that serves Oahu Island.

Housing on MCBH is privatized and managed by Forest City Residential Management. There are 2150 available units on base, which range from 2 -5 bedroom homes. If you are looking for housing off-base, your best bet would be looking at Kaneohe, a small town right outside the base of 37,000; or Kailua, a slightly larger town with a population of 40,000. In any case, keep in mind that rental prices and cost of living, in general, are significantly higher in Hawaii compared to the mainland, because it is an island.

There are no DoD schools on the base. All public education in Hawaii is handled by the Hawaii Department of Education, it is not handled on a county level. However, Mokapu Elementary School is located right at the center of the base. For middle schools and high schools, children of service members can go to many schools in Kailua or Kaneohe.

The Mokapu Peninsula is home to many attractions, such as a golf course, and a lot of pristine beaches that are relatively secluded.
