Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point (MCAS Cherry Point) is situated in Havelock, North Carolina about 90 miles west of Cape Hatteras. It was built in the eastern part of the state in 1941 and housed the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The role of this base ranges from training soldiers and deploying them for Pacific actions to detecting submarine dangers. Havelock, where this base is, is one of the safest cities to live in, and is famous for being where the largest Marine Corps air station is located.

Apart from the barracks located at the base, there are other MCAS Cherry Point family homes that have nice neighborhoods. There is provision for playgrounds, basketball, tennis courts, swimming pools, fitness centers, and dog parks. Neighborhoods like Slocum Village, Nugent Cove Legacy, Nugent Cove, Binder Oaks, and Grant’s Landing offer premium locations to stay on base. However, if you choose to stay off base, there are a lot of good places to go to like Trent Woods, Brices Creek, River Bend, and New Bern.

This marine air station has no DoD schools on base for children to attend so they will have to go to schools in the Craven County Public School District. Schools that fall under this district include A.H. Bangert, Arthur W. Edwards, Ben D. Quinn, Craven Early College, Early College East, and Havelock High. The Craven Community College is a great option for tertiary education, as are colleges in the towns nearby like the University of North Carolina and Boston University.

If you are going to stay in Havelock, you should know that the winters are short but very cold and you will have rain most of the year. You could take a ride in the Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach Free Ferry, visit the Croatan National Forest or go to the Carmike Cinema to watch a movie.
