Marine Safety Laboratory is a research facility that operates under the US Coast Guard. The facility, among other major US Coast Guard installations in the area such as USCG Station New London and the USCG Academy, is located at 1 Chelsea Street in the city of New London, New London County. The building which the Marine Safety Laboratory is in is also home to the International Ice Patrol, and the National Ocean Service, all serving under the US Coast Guard. The primary function of this research facility is to test for any contamination that could be harmful to the general public and the marine life in general in US waters. It is also unique in this regard because it is open to civilians as well if they suspect there is contamination in their water supply. The nearest major city to the facility is New Haven, Connecticut, which is approximately 50 miles south of it.

Since the Marine Safety Laboratory is not exactly a military base, but rather a research facility, many amenities found in military bases are absent in this location, such as government housing. The facility is close to two cities: New London, which has a population of 28,000 residents, and the city of Groton, right on the other side of the Thames River, with a population of almost 40,000 people. As expected, there aren’t any schools on base either. Children of service members are served by the New London School District. Apart from K-12 education, the city of New London is also home to Connecticut College and Mitchell College for upper education.
