MacDill Air Force Base is located on the southernmost tip of Tampa, FL. It is approximately 10 miles away from downtown Tampa, and 20 miles away from downtown St. Petersburg, FL. One of the oldest air force bases in the US, it has been in operation since 1939. Located near the third and fifth-biggest cities in terms of population in Florida, the entire St.Petersburg-Tampa-Clearwater area (also known as the Tampa Bay area) is home to more than 2.8 million residents. MacDill Air Force Base is located in Hillsborough County.

Housing in the MacDill Air Force Base is managed privately, and if you are looking for housing off-base, the top neighborhoods you should check out are Ballast Point, Hyde Park, Palma Ceia, Virginia Park, Sunbay South, Bayside West, Fair Oaks-Manhattan Manor, and Interbay. Out of all these, Ballast Point is the closest to MacDill Air Force Base. Since Tampa is a major city, looking at South Tampa for your off-base home will be your best bet — although if you don’t mind the longer commute, you can also check out other neighborhoods along the Selmon Expressway which makes commutes a lot shorter.

There are no DoD schools in MacDill AFB. Residents are served by Hillsborough County Public Schools. There is an on-base elementary school, the Tinker Elementary School, but there is no on-base middle school or high school. That being said, South Tampa is home to many schools that are very close to the base, so there are many choices.

Tampa receives sunshine more than 240 days a year on average, so naturally, it has become a favorite of swimmers, surfers, boaters, golfers, and outdoor enthusiasts in general. MacDill Air Force Base houses a golf complex itself! Apart from that, there are excellent seafood restaurants such as Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, Shells Seafood, and many more that offer military discounts.
