Letterkenny Army Depot, the Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence (CITE) for Air Defense and Tactical Missile Systems, was established in 1942. It is under the command structure of the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, and its facilities are used to conduct maintenance, modification, storage, and demilitarization operations on tactical missiles and ammunition. The Depot is located primarily in Letterkenny Township and extends into Greene Hamilton Townships, all in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, just northwest of the borough of Chambersburg. The Depot consists of nearly 18,000 acres (71 km²) and is the largest employer in Franklin County, Pennsylvania,

There is no on-base housing, but Army personnel looking for off-post accommodation can find homes for sale and rent in Chambersburg and Shippensburg’s surrounding communities. Off-post housing can also be found in the nearby communities of Fayetteville, Hagerstown, and Gettysburg.

Lacking on-base schools, the Depot falls under the Chambersburg Area Public School District, encompassing approximately 250 square miles, including the municipality of Chambersburg, plus the townships of Hamilton, Greene, Lurgan, and a portion of Guilford Township. Schools in this district range from elementary to high school level. They include Fayetteville Elementary, New Franklin Elementary, Chambersburg Area Middle School South, and Chambersburg Area Senior High School.
