Laughlin Air Force Base is located east of Del Rio, Texas and serves as a training facility for pilots. Built in 1943 as Laughlin Army Airfield and focused on training pilots for WWII, this air field was closed in 1945. In 1952 this facility was reopened as Laughlin Air Force Base with a mission to once again train pilots for war. In 1957 the mission of this base changed to that of reconnaissance and air sampling and planes from this base were the first to have photographic evidence of Soviet missile installations in Cuba. Laughlin Air Force Base expanded its mission to include training once again in 1961 and continues to be an active base at present.
