Located in Hampton, Virginia, Langley Air Force Base was established after entering WWI in 1917. One of the oldest continuously active air bases in the United States, originally called Langley Field, the installation was established by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the predecessor to NASA. Langley has a history of being a center of innovation, beginning in the 1920’s when a new air power concept was tried and proven and during WWII when specialized equipment was developed and used in antisubmarine warfare. In 1946, the Tactical Air Command was established at Langley Field and in 1948, Langley Field was named Langley Air Force Base. The Tactical Air Command was deactivated and the newly formed Air Combat Command took its place in 1992. Langley Air Force Base was joined with Fort Eustis in 2010, forming Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

Hampton, Virginia, was founded in 1610, establishing the first continuous English-speaking settlement. In 1634, America’s first “free school” was started, offering education to local children free or at reduced cost. Another highlight in Hampton’s long history was having the first NASA astronauts trained here. Hampton has many attractions for residents and visitors that include the Virginia Air & Space Center, the Casemate Museum of Fort Monroe, Bluebird Gap Farm, Hampton History Museum, the Air Power Park, and other local public parks, many other museums, and restaurants.
