The history of this base dates back to 1939 when some land was leased in the southern part of Albuquerque, next to the already existing Bernalillo County international airport with which it shares runways. It spreads over 209 square km, meaning it is the largest military installation in the Materiel Command. The primary objective of this base is to support any nuclear mission in safety measures, regardless of its purpose.


Bernalillo County has a mild, desert climate with hot summers and winter temperatures in the 40s. Kirtland AFB and the surrounding region are home to many historical sites, museums, art galleries, theaters, great restaurants, and breweries. There are a multitude of recreational opportunities on base, including arts and crafts, bowling, camping, golfing, and swimming. Kirtland Family Housing is managed by Hunt Military Communities and comprises three distinct, vibrant communities encompassing over 1,300 duplexes and single-family homes. The Neighborhoods are Village I-VII, Maxwell place, and Pershing Park. Military families have many options to live off base near Kirtland AFB; some families prefer the excitement and activity in the downtown Albuquerque neighborhoods. Others like the farther communities of Four Hills to the East or Enchanted Hills of Paradise Hills to the North of the base.


New Mexico offers traditional public schools, public charter schools, and private schools. For younger children, there are a variety of local child care programs on and off base with two base elementary schools, Wherry Elementary and Sandia Base Elementary. The rest of the students who reside on base attend school in the Albuquerque, Los Lunas, Rio Rancho, or Moriarty-Edgewood Municipal Public Schools District. The option for Private schooling is also available ranging from elementary to high school.
