Joint Base Lewis-McChord is near McChord AFB, 9.1 miles south-southwest of Tacoma, Washington. It is a joint base resulting from the combination of the US Army’s Fort Lewis and Air Force’s McChord Air Force Base in February 2010. The base is a training and mobilization installation and is the sole Army power-projection base west of the Rocky Mountains in the Contiguous United States. Its strategic location gives quick access to the deepwater ports of Tacoma, Olympia, and Seattle for deploying equipment. Tacoma, Washington, is a port city located along Washington’s Puget Sound, 32 miles southwest of Seattle and is home to the base.
