Joint Base Lewis-McChord is near McChord AFB, 9.1 miles south-southwest of Tacoma, Washington. It is a joint base resulting from the combination of the US Army’s Fort Lewis and Air Force’s McChord Air Force Base in February 2010. The base is a training and mobilization installation and is the sole Army power-projection base west of the Rocky Mountains in the Contiguous United States. Its strategic location gives quick access to the deepwater ports of Tacoma, Olympia, and Seattle for deploying equipment. Tacoma, Washington, is a port city located along Washington’s Puget Sound, 32 miles southwest of Seattle and is home to the base.

Some very good neighborhoods to stay on the base are North End, Old Town, New Tacoma, Lakewood, and Northeast Tacoma. However, housing on the base is privatized and managed by Liberty Military Housing. It offers about 20 different neighborhoods for you to choose from; from the 2-4 bedroom apartments around the Madigan gate to duplexes around the North Gate. There is something for everyone.

The base has Fort Lewis College, a beautiful school in the mountains of Durango that provides quality education from marketing to kinesiology. Around the base, Tacoma also has good schools like Hilltop Heritage Middle School and Stadium High School.

The beautiful city of Tacoma is famous for the Museum of Glass, which has works by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly among its exhibits. The Tacoma Art Museum, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, and Mount Rainier National Park are equally exciting attraction points.
