In 1942, four bases were initially established on farmland located in Princess Anne County that included Camp Bradford, Camp Shelton, U.S. Naval Frontier Base, and Amphibious Training Base. At the end of WWII, the four bases were partially inactivated. In 1945 the bases at Little Creek were consolidated because of their geographic location and was renamed Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek. This facility trains men and women from all branches of the Armed Forces, as well as military students from foreign nations in amphibious warfare. Long before there were colonies established, the land that now comprises Fort Story witnessed the very beginning of our country at the 1,607 first landing site. Nearly 300 years later, in 1914, Fort Story became a military installation. During WWI, Fort Story was integrated into the Coast Defenses of the Chesapeake Bay and remained a Coast Artillery Corps post until after the end of WWII. At present, Fort Story is the Army’s only training facility that specializes in logistics-over-the-shore operations and trains troops on amphibious equipment and to practice the transfer of military cargo from ship to shore. In 2009 Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek and Fort Story were merged and renamed to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek–Fort Story.
