Hawthorne Army Depot is a U.S. Army Joint Munitions Command ammunition storage depot located near the town of Hawthorne in western Nevada, U.S.A. It is directly south of Walker Lake, covers 147,000 acres, and has 600,000 square feet of storage space in 2,427 bunkers. The depot is known as the “World’s Largest Depot” and is divided into four areas, namely ammunition, storage, industrial, and production areas.

Hawthorne Army Depot stores reserve ammunition after the first 30 days of a significant conflict. It is only partially staffed during peacetime, but provision has been made to expand staffing as necessary rapidly. An independent contractor runs the depot under an agreement with the government.

Hawthorne Army Depot surrounds the small town of Hawthorne, where most of its employees reside in neighborhoods such as HollyGlen, Cypave, and Holly Park. Before the facility became contractor-operated, government-owned properties neighboring Hawthorne used to house civil service workers and military personnel, including the now-abandoned town of Babbitt and military housing known as Schweer Drive.

Due to there not being a school on base, Students will be served by the Mineral County School District, which comprises six schools ranging from Pk to grade 12. The schools are named after the region they’re in.
