Great Lakes Training Center, formally known as Naval Station Great Lakes is a boot camp of the US Navy, located in North Chicago in Lake County, Illinois. North Chicago is a city of 30,000 residents, and it is a suburb of Chicago – the most populous city of Illinois and the 3rd largest city of the US in terms of population – following New York and Los Angeles. Naval Station Great Lakes is around 40 miles north of downtown Chicago, and it is 30 miles north of Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

Naval Station Great Lakes offers privatized on-base housing for all ranks and pay grades. The privatized housing is managed by Hunt Military Communities. Since there is a lot of demand for housing on-base and limited supply, the waiting times can be quite long. If you are looking for off-base housing, your best bet would be to look at houses in North Chicago, as most neighborhoods that are closer to downtown Chicago have very long commute times due to traffic and they are pretty expensive. The vacancy rate in North Chicago is 9%, which means you won’t have a difficult time finding a suitable home for you and your family. The cost of living in North Chicago is more or less the same as the national average.

There are no DoD schools on base, and there aren’t any public schools available on the base either. Children of service members are served by North Chicago Community Unit School District 187, which offers many schools just outside the base.

Being near the third-largest city in the US, there are so many attractions to see and visit near Naval Station Great Lakes. Six Flags Great America is only 9 miles away from the base. Chicago Riverwalk is a unique location to be found in a major city, also the Art Institute of Chicago houses one of the most comprehensive art collections in the world!
