Fort Riley is located in central Kansas, between the cities of Manhattan and Junction City. It is 5 miles north of Junction City, and it is 15 miles southwest of Manhattan. The base is spread out more than 100,000 across Riley and Geary counties. The base is 70 miles away from the state capital, Topeka, and it is 130 miles west of Kansas City in Missouri. It has been in continuous use since 1853, making it one of the oldest bases in the US. Nowadays the base is home to many major units such as the 1st Infantry Division.

There is on-base housing in Fort Riley and it is privatized. Housing is managed by Corvias Military Living, which offers 6 neighborhoods assigned by rank and bedroom qualifications. Since it is a relatively isolated base, there is a great demand for on-base housing, which makes waiting times even longer. If you are looking for housing off the base, your best bet would be to look at Junction City or Manhattan. Both of these cities have lower costs of living and rental prices than the national average, which is a huge plus.

There are no DoD schools on base, however, there are 6 schools in total for residents on base. Of these 6 schools, 5 are elementary schools and one of them is a middle school. Residents on base are served by Geary County Unified School District 475.
