Fort McCoy is a massive base covering about 60,000 acres of land between Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin, in Monroe County. Fort McCoy was created by the amalgamation of Camp Emory Upton and Camp Robinson in 1926, and since then, this post has been used as a training center by the Wisconsin State Patrol and the military. Monroe County, where this base is situated, is unofficially called the “cheese capital of the USA” because of its extensive dairy farming practice.


Apart from being cheese heaven, this county has some of the nicest places to live in Wisconsin, for example, Sparta, Tomah, Cashton, and Norwalk, to name a few. Fort McCoy’s housing is managed by Fort McCoy homes, and one of the on-base housing options to stay at is the South Post Housing. West Salem, Wilton, and Cashton are places to stay off base.
