Fort Irwin is a major training facility for the US Army in the state of California. It is located close to the city of Barstow, and it is a part of the US Army Forces Command. The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, also known as the Blackhorse, is the main unit located at the base. The base also hosts a state-of-the-art hospital that provides medical services to service members as well as civilians. Barstow, California, is the city nearest to the base. It serves as a major transportation hub for the Inland Empire region in California.

Barstow is a relatively small city, but its status as an important hub of transportation has made it a busy city with a lively real estate market. The most popular neighborhoods in the city are Barstow Southeast, Lenwood, and Hinkley.

Fort Irwin does not feature schools run directly by the Department of Defense. Children of service members can attend local public schools, which are managed by the Barstow Unified School District, for education. The school district features 8 elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school.

Though Barstow is not a large city, you can certainly find plenty of local landmarks that will keep you interested. Some notable things to do while you are staying at Barstow include visiting the Rainbow Basin Natural Area as well as the Route 66 Mother Road Museum.
