US Coast Guard Academy is one of the 5 service academies in the US, the others being the Military Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, Air Force Academy, and the Naval Academy. The US Coast Guard Academy is responsible for providing quality education for the future officers of the Coast Guard, who receive a Bachelor of Science degree after graduation. The academy is located adjacent to Connecticut College, in the city of New London, New London County, Connecticut. The academy is located on the shores of Thames River, the nearest major city is New Haven, and it is located 50 miles away from the academy.

Since this is a service academy, rather than a fully-fledged military base, most of the amenities that can usually be found in a military base such as on-base housing are not existent. However, cadets of the Coast Guard Academy can seek housing at the Naval Submarine Base New London, which offers privatized on-base housing (provided by Balfour Beatty Communities). The housing units on NSB New London range from two to four bedrooms, however, the waiting list can be quite long, which is why many cadets look for housing within the local community. The academy is close to two cities: New London, which has a population of 28,000 residents, and the city of Groton, right on the other side of the Thames River, with a population of almost 40,000 people. Both cities offer many types of housing for all kinds of family sizes, however, keep in mind that the area has a relatively higher cost of living compared to the national average.

As expected, there aren’t any schools on the facility grounds either. Children of service members are served by the New London School District. Apart from K-12 education, the city of New London is also home to Connecticut College and Mitchell College for upper education.
