Bellows Air Force Station, formerly known as the Bellows Field, is a military training area that is located in Waimanalo, on the island of Oahu, in Hawaii. The training area is in Oahu Island, the most populated island (with a population of approximately 1 million people) out of the 8 major islands of Hawaii. Bellows Field held a very important role in history, it was one of the airfields that were bombed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the attack, it was never fully repaired to its former glory, instead, parts of the base were turned into a recreational area for current and former members of the Armed Forces. The Marine Corps acquired approximately 1,000 acres to set up a training base, and that is its current main mission.

Since Bellows AFS is a training area rather than a fully-fledged base, there is no housing on the base. If you are sent there on a long-term assignment, you would have to look for housing off the base. Luckily, the town of Kailua is very close, and rental prices are more suitable than downtown Honolulu. However, keep in mind that the cost of living is almost twice as high in Hawaii because it is an island.

As expected, there are no DoD schools, nor there are public schools on base either, however, the town of Kailua has 7 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 2 high schools. Unlike the mainland, all public education in Hawaii is handled by the Hawaii Department of Education, it is not handled on a county level.

Hawaii is possibly the most diverse place in all the US, and PCS’ing to Hawaii is certainly a unique experience. While that may come with some downsides as well (such as the constant rain and coqui frogs), the positives of the Aloha spirit outweigh them.
