The Radford Army Ammunition Plant Army Base is located about seven miles northwest of the city of Radford, Virginia and is situated across two separate counties; Pulaski and Montgomery. This installation, consisting of two separate facilities, the Radford manufacturing facility and the New River Storage Unit, that are placed about twelve miles apart. The two facilities, built in 1941 and 1942, were designed and constructed separately. Since the end of WWII and over the time since, Radford Army Ammunition Plant has made several improvements to meet changing Army and Department of Defense standards. The primary mission of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant is to produce, provide and store energetics, munitions, and propellants for the United States Army. The Radford Army Ammunition Plant produces munitions and propellants ranging from those required for the individual soldiers’ weapons systems to tank, field artillery, air defense, missile, and Navy weapons systems and is the sole supplier of the explosive, Trinitrotoluene (TNT), for the Department of Defense.
The city of Radford is located in a rural part of Virginia, about 30 miles from Roanoke, Virginia. Home to Radford University, this bustling little city is not far from attractions found in Roanoke and Salem, Virginia. There are quite a few interesting attractions located in Radford, however, and include Wildwood Park, The Glencoe Museum, St. Albans Sanatorium, Bisset Park, Ingles Farm, and Radford University Art Museum.
