For more than a century, NSF Indian Head and the Town of Indian Head have maintained a mutually beneficial partnership with perks such as employment opportunities for local citizens, joint use of recreational amenities, housing, food, and many other services to benefit both communities. There are no schools on base at NSF Indian Head. However, the Charles County Public School System will serve active duty military families students. Moreso, there are 41 colleges within 50 miles of the town.
There is a limited amount of housing available on-base, with few designed for disability access. As with most government housing quarters, there is a waiting list based on family size and rank. The time taken varies according to the number of available housing and the rotation dates of residents. Off-base housing for sale or rent can be found in the nearby communities of Indian Head, Marbury, Accokeek, and Waldorf.
Originally a small community, the facilities at NSF Indian Head were continually improved and updated and now are among the most advanced recreational and entertainment centers. The local community clubs and family centers are excellent with recreational sites like snack bars, malls, restaurants, parks, and sports courts.
