Description

Naval Station Pascagoula in Mississippi is an artificial body created over the years by dredge materials deposited in the area from the Pascagoula federal channel and a nearby shipyard. In 1985, the Secretary of the Navy selected the island as one of the Strategic Homeport sites and became operational in 1992. Located on the eastern edge of Mississippi’s Secret Coast, this town of Pascagoula of about 22,000 people lies midway between Gulfport, Mississippi, and Mobile, Alabama, south of Interstate 10. The Pascagoula River is known locally as the Singing River because of interesting sounds that can be heard in the vicinity of the river and thrived in the 19th century as a lumber shipping port.
