Naval Weapons Station Charleston was commissioned in 1941 and had two separate missions: the home for two strategic submarine squadrons and a station with a capacity for more than 60 million pounds of conventional ordnance. Till today Charleston Weapons Station is the only military installation in the continental U.S. Naval Weapons Station that produces and stores ordnance. Charleston is situated on the west bank of the Cooper River, in the cities of Goose Creek and Hanahan, South Carolina. Goose Creek is a city in Berkeley County in South Carolina and is included within the Charleston-North Charleston–Summerville metropolitan area and the Charleston-North Charleston Urbanized Area.

Joint Base Charleston Family Housing offers civilian and military housing for the people who work at the Weapons Base. There are a total of 562 family housing units that are located in two different areas, and both are gated communities. Nonetheless, they are friendly off-base locations like Park Circle, Ashley Shores, Ashley Junction, Deweys Hill, Windsor Place, Ashley Acres, and Charleston Heights.

Naval Weapons Station Charleston is surrounded by three separate school districts; Charleston, Dorchester District 2, and Berkeley County school districts are all within the commuting area. Still, there are no on-base schools. However, Hunley Park Elementary School, North Charleston High School, North Charleston Elementary School, Academic Magnet High School, Goodwin Elementary School, and Morningside Middle School are schools your kids could go to. You should note that Park University is located on the base.

You can go to Charleston’s Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, go kayaking at Shem Creek, walk the Ravenel Bridge, tour breweries in the area, or attend an Oyster Roast. There is always something to do around you.
