Naval Air Space Patuxent River (NAVAIR) is situated around the mouth of Patuxent River on the Chesapeake Bay in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. This naval air base was established in 1943 and served as a test center for systems relating to naval aviation. This station is quite large as it occupies over 14,500 acres in St. Mary’s County. This county is located in Southern Maryland and is a haven of tidewater fishing, farming and crabbing communities.

The housing for NAVAIR is privatized with about six different neighborhoods located on the base including the NAS Patuxent River Housing Service Center, and Liberty Military Housing – Patuxent River. However, popular off base places to live include Academy Hills, Redgate Farm, and Avenmar, all located at Leonardtown Town. You could also look for areas around Valley Lee and Mechanicville.

There are no DoD schools around the base, but students can attend schools in Calvert County, Charles County, and St. Mary’s County. St. Mary’s County has good public schools like Great Mills High School, Fairlead Academy, Margaret Brent Middle, Spring Ridge Middle, and Benjamin Banneker Elementary. It also has a good charter school and an alternative learning center. The St. Mary’s College of Maryland is an excellent institution with a great opportunity to further your education with its top liberal arts degree.

Finally, there are several top sights in the county like the Point Lookout State Park, which is a recreational site, Historic Sotterley where you can drink wine and enjoy a walk through History and St. Clement’s Island State Park; a good spot for hiking and fishing with the family.
