Virginia Beach is a large city that is home to multiple military installations, including Naval Air Station Oceana. The site of the first landing in 1607, in what is now Virginia Beach, the area was not settled until a few years later. One of the original homes, built in 1836 and owned by Captain Adam Thoroughgood, is still standing and has been restored, serving as a historical site that is open to the public. Virginia Beach, founded in 1887, developed over time as a resort following the construction of a hotel and railroad link with Norfolk. In 1906 Virginia Beach was incorporated as a town and as a city in 1952. The former Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach merged in 1963, becoming the City of Virginia Beach. In addition to being a resort city, Virginia Beach is home to multiple military installations, including Naval Air Station Oceana.

With an economy that is largely based on tourism, Virginia Beach has much to offer residents and visitors for fun and excitement for people of all ages. Some of the interesting sites to see include the Francis Land House, the Adam Thoroughgood House, Lotus Garden Park, Ocean Breeze Fun Park, Captain Jack’s Pirate Ship Adventures, the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum, First landing State Park, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, and many wonderful restaurants, beaches, and great places to shop.
