Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is located in the Miramar neighborhood of San Diego, California. The base is in San Diego County, which is the fifth-largest county in the country in terms of population, and the city of San Diego is the second-largest city in California following Los Angeles. The base is 17 miles north of downtown San Diego. Formerly known as the Naval Air Station Miramar, the base was made popular because it used to be the training location of the US Navy’s TOPGUN training program. Nowadays, it is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and the 1st Marine Logistics Group.

Housing in MCAS Miramar is privatized and managed by Liberty Military Housing. Liberty Military Housing offers 6 distinct neighborhoods for different ranks and family sizes, and all of them are located on base apart from one neighborhood, the Mira Mesa Ridge which is located right outside the base. The waiting times can take as long as long 24 months, depending on the neighborhood chosen. Because of this, a lot of military families look for housing off-base. San Diego, as the second-largest city in California, offers many opportunities and selections for families of all sizes. The best neighborhoods to look for in San Diego if you are looking for off-base housing, you should look at are El Cajon, La Jolla, La Mesa, or Chula Vista if you don’t mind the commute.

There are no DoD schools on base, and there aren’t any public schools on base either. However, since the base is located in a very central location, access to public schools is not limited. Children of military families living in the base or in the city are served by the San Diego Unified School District.
