The Marine Safety Center is a support unit located in Washington DC on the east bank of the Pontomac River. The coast guard base is one of the 5 military branches in the USA, and is under the command of the Maritime Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection. The Pontomac river forms its southwestern and southern border with the state of Virginia, sharing a border with the state of Maryland on the remaining sides. Washington DC is in the humid subtropical zone, with summers being hot and humid and winters cool with light snow. The district witnesses blizzards average once every four to six years.
