The Marine Safety Center is a support unit located in Washington DC on the east bank of the Pontomac River. The coast guard base is one of the 5 military branches in the USA, and is under the command of the Maritime Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection. The Pontomac river forms its southwestern and southern border with the state of Virginia, sharing a border with the state of Maryland on the remaining sides. Washington DC is in the humid subtropical zone, with summers being hot and humid and winters cool with light snow. The district witnesses blizzards average once every four to six years.

The MSC Coast Guard Base has no on-base family housing, so most families choose to live in Northern Virginia, which is nearby. Virginia has single-family homes, a convenient commute to DC, and good school districts. Virginia is home to George Mason University; it is the largest county in DC and is inside the beltway, along with Arlington and Alexandria.

There are no DoD schools on the MSC Coast Guard Base; students in the area go to public schools operated by DCPS. The District of Columbia Public Schools administrates all 123 public schools in DC, including Anacostia High, McKinley Technology High, and Duke Ellington School of Arts. There are a number of private higher institutions in DC, including American University, Howard University, and John Hopkins University. The district also has public universities, including the University of the District of Columbia, providing undergraduate and graduate learning. The city also has three medical schools and teaching hospitals.
