Government military housing is comprised of two parts – one is located on base, named the Belle Chasse community which comes from the neighborhood just outside the base, and another community in the Algiers (also known as Federal City) neighborhood of New Orleans, named The Village. The Village, while not on base, is also a gated community that does not allow access without the necessary credentials of the Armed Forces. In total, both of these communities have 936 housing units available in both locations. Because of limited supply, many military families are looking for housing off the base. Popular neighborhoods off-base include Mid-City, and Bywater areas if you want to be closer to the French Quarter, or Algiers and Timberlane if you want to be closer to the base.
There are no DoD schools on base, children of service members that live on the base are served by the Plaquemines Parish School District. There is one elementary school on base, the Belle Chasse Academy. Overall, Plaquemines Parish School District offers 3 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school.
New Orleans is described as the most unique city in the US, and for good reason. It has a fantastic history, world-famous cuisine, and a multi-lingual heritage that is unmatched by any other city in the United States.
