Fort Stewart is an Army Post located on the north side of the city of Hinesville, Georgia. While Hinesville is in Liberty County, Fort Stewart is spread across two counties, these being Liberty and Bryan counties. Apart from Hinesville, Fort Stewart is 40 miles to the southwest of downtown Savannah, Georgia’s fifth-largest city in terms of population. Like many Army Posts in the area, the base was founded during World War II, and nowadays it is home to the 3rd Infantry Division.

Fort Stewart offers on-base housing that is managed privately. The Fort Stewart Family Homes offers 10 neighborhoods that offer many types of housing, from single-family homes to apartment complexes. Overall, there are more than 3,000 units on-base offered by Fort Stewart Family Homes. However, it is reported that the waitlist can get pretty long, so many active-duty members are looking for housing off-base. Because of its proximity to the base, many members look for housing in Hinesville, Georgia. Rents and the overall cost of living in Hinesville are lower than the national average, which is another advantage. If you don’t mind the longer commute, you can also look for housing in Richmond Hill, one of the largest suburbs of Savannah.

DoD offers 3 elementary schools on base: Kessler Elementary School, Murray Elementary School, and the Diamond Elementary School. If you are looking for middle and high schools, you would have to select schools operated by the Liberty County School District.
