Fort Sam Houston, built in 1876, is an Army post that is a part of Joint Base San Antonio, which is the only facility that lies within the city limits of San Antonio, Texas Fort Sam Houston is one of the Army’s oldest installations and was placed on the US Historical Site Registration in 1975. “Fort Sam,” as it is commonly called, is home to one of the largest collections of historic military post structures. This city is Texas’ oldest municipality with a rich colonial heritage, being home to five 18th-century Spanish frontier missions which have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Serving as the seat of Bexar County, Texas, San Antonio is the center of the San Antonio-New Braunfels metropolitan statistical area, which is commonly called the Greater San Antonio. Currently, San Antonio is the third largest city in Texas with a population of over a million people, many of whom are connected to the United States Military.
