Fort Myer is home to the United States Army’s oldest infantry unit, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Division, known as the “Old Guard.” This unit holds the honor of keeping vigil over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. This unit also has the role of being the Army’s official ceremonial unit and escort to the president, participating in thousands of ceremonies each year at locations such as the White House, Pentagon, and others. In addition to the Old Guard, Fort Myer is also home to the United States Army Band, Pershing’s Own, and Headquarters U.S. Army Garrison which includes Fort Myer and Fort McNair. Fort Myer is located next to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. In 2009 Fort Myer and Fort McNair were joined with the Marine Corps’ Henderson Hall to become Joint Base Myer-Henderson.

Arlington County is a county in the northern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia that contains no incorporated towns or cities within its boundaries. Arlington County lies on the southwestern bank of the Potomac River and is directly across from Washington, D.C. Arlington, Virginia has quite a few interesting places for residents and visitors to enjoy including the Arlington National Cemetery, the United States Marine Corps War Memorial, the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, the Women in Military Service for America Memorial, Arlington House, the Mount Vernon Trail, the DEA Museum & Visitors Center, The Pentagon, Signature Theatre, Upton Hill Regional Park, Nicecream Factory, and many restaurants, public parks, and shopping locations.

For those stationed at Fort Myer, housing is available for single soldiers that are E-5 and below. There is no on-post housing for senior enlisted, officers, married soldiers, or their families. There are many safe neighborhoods in Arlington that provide housing that is conveniently located a short distance away from Fort Myer and include Riverwood, Lyon Village, Woodmont, Dover Crystal, Donaldson Run, North Rosslyn, Maywood, and Old Dominion, as well as others.
