Fort McNair is a US Army Post located in the Southwestern quadrant of Washington DC, positioned at the tip of Greenleaf Point. The base is situated on the merging point of the Washington Channel and the Anacostia River, becoming the Potomac River. After the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 2005, it has become a part of the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. Fort McNair is located 4 miles south of Downtown Washington DC, 8 miles away from Arlington, and 8 miles away from Alexandria, Virginia.

On-base housing on Fort McNair is very limited, and it is only available for officers, ranks O-1 and upwards. If you are E-6 and above, you won’t even be able to use unaccompanied housing on base, and you will have to look for housing off the base. If you are looking for housing off-base, you should look at Southwest Waterfront and the Capitol Riverfront. Other than that, most military families also look for housing in Maryland and Virginia, in counties such as Anne Arundel, Calvert, and Charles Counties in Maryland, Alexandria, and Arlington Counties in Virginia. However, keep in mind that the area has a higher cost of living than the national average, including rental prices, so you might have to pay more than your BAH.

There are no DoD schools on base, nor any public schools. Since Fort McNair is situated in a very central location, near two states and the District of Columbia, children of service members can be served by a variety of schooling districts. If you are living on-base, you will be served by DC Public Schools.
