If you are looking for housing off-base, you should look at Southwest Waterfront and the Capitol Riverfront. Other than that, most military families also look for housing in Maryland and Virginia, in counties such as Anne Arundel, Calvert, and Charles Counties in Maryland, Alexandria, and Arlington Counties in Virginia. However, keep in mind that the area has a higher cost of living than the national average, including rental prices, so you might have to pay more than your BAH.

There are no DoD schools on base, nor any public schools. Since Fort McNair is situated in a very central location, near two states and the District of Columbia, children of service members can be served by a variety of schooling districts. If you are living on-base, you will be served by DC Public Schools.
