Description

Fort Knox is an active US Army base located in the northwest of Kentucky, near the city of Elizabethtown. The base is spread across 3 counties (Bullitt, Hardin, and Meade) and over 170 square miles. It is 40 miles southwest of Louisville, the most populous city in Kentucky, and 12 miles north of Elizabethtown. Fort Knox is home to the United States Bullion Depository, which keeps more than half of Treasury’s gold. Fort Knox has become synonymous with the Bullion Depository in the minds of most people, even though the Bullion Depository is an installation that is part of Fort Knox. These days, the base is home to 100th Infantry Division, 84th Division, V Corps, First Army Division East, and other smaller units.

Fort Knox offers on-post housing, and it is privatized. On-post housing is managed by Knox Hills LLC, and they offer 20 neighborhoods with two-, three-, and four-bedroom houses, which are assigned depending on rank and the size of the family. Since the base is located in a relatively central location, there are a lot of military families that are looking for housing off base. However, central Louisville can still be far from the base, so the most popular destinations for off-base housing are suburbs of Louisville, such as Orell and Shepherdsville. Elizabethtown is also a popular spot since it is closer and less expensive than Louisville.

Fort Knox has DoD schools located on the base. There are, in total, 4 DoD schools, which are: Kingsolver Elementary School, Van Voorhis Elementary School, Scott Intermediate School, and Fort Knox Middle High School.
