Fort Detrick originally began as a small municipal airport established at Frederick County, Maryland, in 1929. It sits on Schreider Street in the northern part of Maryland. It served as an airbase until 1942; after that, the military purchased the airfield along with additional fields. Fort Derrick is home to U.S. Army Medical Research, Materiel Command, Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, and the National Cancer Institute. The base is the largest employer in Frederick County and contributes more than $500 million to the local economy annually.


Frederick County is the third fastest-growing county in Maryland and boasts one of the best public school systems in the state. You could get off-base housing from 5 different cities, which are all less than 10 miles away from the base, excluding Mt Airy, which is up to 20 miles away. They include Clover Hill, Virginia; Mt. Airy, Maryland; Frederick, Maryland; Middletown, Maryland; and Ballenger Creek, Maryland.


Frederick County is rich in history and tradition, dating back to the Civil War, boasting of numerous museums and historical sites and parks, malls and restaurants. Its proximity to Washington DC and the I-270 corridor technology allows residents even more opportunities.
