Dugway Proving Ground (DPG), located in Tooele County, Utah, was established in 1942, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, as a US Army facility that was designed to test biological and chemical weapons. Dugway continues this mission today and is the US Army’s leading science and testing facility in Utah. Dugway Proving Ground is responsible for testing and evaluating almost all of the Department of Defense chemical and biological equipment and capabilities, containing many laboratories test chambers and field test grids. In addition to the evaluation and testing of chemical and biological weapons, Dugway Proving Ground supports training for the military and first responders, and in the development and testing of unmanned aircraft. Tooele County, located in the west desert region of Utah, is where the Great Salt Desert is found. Tooele County is a large county where much of its land is taken up by the Dugway Proving Ground. Closest to the Dugway Proving Ground is the small town of Dugway, and just a bit further away, the city of Tooele, Utah.
Although in the desert, there are some interesting places to visit for those who reside or are just visiting Tooele County. Some of these attractions include the Dugway Geode Beds, Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge, Donner Reed Museum, Iosepa Ghost Town, and Settlement Canyon.
While there is on-post housing available in Dugway, there is a waiting list for it. Many of the personnel stationed at Dugway Proving Ground live off-post, residing in Tooele, which is about a 45 minute commute. Some of the neighborhoods that are favorable include Stansbury Park, Wendover, Erda, and Arches Academy.
